I have only very limited discussions of the Merovingian's role in the movie. He seems important for two reasons. First is his comments on causality, which relate to two other concepts highlighted in the film, namely choice and hope. The second is simply in his choice of name.

I had never heard of the term Merovingian before, but of course a Google search turned up 20,200 links. Aparently the Mirovingians were a line of Frankish kings said to be descended directly from Jesus after he rose from the dead and hooked up with Mary Magdalene. So here we have a character, described by the Oracle as a "very dangerous program" who only seeks "more power", and the name he has chosen links him to the messianic figure. It is hard to believe he is actually related or tied to Neo, but could this bolster the view that the Merovingian is a previous One, or perhaps a failed One who in his lust for more power -- and rage against his own failure -- has kidnapped the Keymaker to prevent another One from succeeding where he couldn't?

Also -- to go out on a limb here -- could the Merovingian also be a Lord of the Underworld figure? his wife is Perspehone, who in Greek myth was snatched away by Hades to be his wife. I have to admit I don't really see much case for that, except that he commands the Twins, wraith-like demons who can vanish and reappear at will.

The Merovingian kings are the leaders of the Sicambrian franks, which started with clovis I and ended with Pepin the short. but did it end.
After the rise and fall of the Knights Templar after a Papal Bull ended their reign by Pope clement the fifth, the merovingians were the blood line of christ and protected by the Knights of the Temple. (remember where the great party was? Ans: the temple.)
The Knights then went underground and resurfaced as the freemasons, in those days and still today a secret society that give reverence to their highest being, the great architect!
If you can't see the alignment of the masons and the Knights, look no further than the great gothic churches, notre Dame, St paul, Santiago de compostela and you will find that master masons built them, and that history recognises they were built by the Knights of the Temple.
The great churches are in fact in the shape of a constellation , Virgo. But I don't know if virgo has any thing to do with it.

Icidentally - did anyone notice the camera pan to the left just at the start of the Merovingian scene and see an indian looking guy being escorted out of the restaurant, then it pans back. I'll bet you that guy appears in Revolutions! Who is he and why did he go to the Merovingian and what did he say?!

To comment on K's noticing of the man in the restaurant. Have you played Enter The Matrix? You definitely should if you're looking for underlying storylines/explanations of The Matrix Reloaded. The Oracle comments that her termination codes were sold to the Merovingian by a program she trusted, and thus leaves her in an altered form. Perhaps this is that same transaction we were seeing?

Perhaps this is the same transaction indeed, since we see this mystery man from the restaurant in the Revolutions trailer. Indeed in Enter the Matrix we are told that the Oracle is betrayed by two programs she trusted, parents, for the possibility of their child. You can see this little family at the big train station 'between the worlds'. The Loop line (in Revolutions). (ie the loop of the next matrix, the loop of a next life)

Let's put a finer point on it, the french guy is Hades Lord of Death and somehow Trinity barters her way in to save Neo, like Orpheus in his myth.

Hades cannot take you unless your predestined time is up, he is the great defender of cause-and-effect. He is feared by gods and mortals alike, for once he comes for you, you cannot escape. Not even the Oracle, indeed her time is almost up, although I suspect she has a knack of coming back in different forms.

Another question for you: the Hobo in Enter the Matrix has his arms covered in watches and knows the duration of the previous Zion..that is he's older than the current Matrix. Is he Time itself? We see him again in this train station.

I also want to point out that in Greek mythology, Persephone was seen as a part of a Trinity - Demeter (mother), Persephone-Kore (maiden-bride), and Hecate (crone).

I think that the Oracle and the Architect both knowingly engineered The One and the Merovingian is sort of a proto-type for The One, but he's kind of to Neo what DOS is to Windows. They do similar things, but Neo has a more "user friendly" interface. I think that when they made the Merovingian they were trying to create a program that felt emotions like humans, only he was never raised as human, he was created and given his adult consciousness. He never really learned caring and compassion, he just has fire, passion and curiousity. He is not a Neo, but he was meant to be The One, the bridge between Humans and Machines.
And Persephone definately seems to be his Trinity, only he never really knew how to care for someone, and never cared about her. He just felt passionate towards her, and passion eventually burns out if love and caring isn't replenshed. I thought it was interesting that when Persephone asked for a kiss, she demanded that Neo make her believe that she was Trinity. She remembered for a moment what the love and passion from Merovingian once was, but she wasn't threatening Trinity when she said it wouldn't last, she was warning her.

The King Arthur legends are about the Merovingian dynasty. Is Neo the son of Merovingian? Interestingly the Merovingians are still in power today. The head is the Priory of Sion. Could this be the reference to Zion? Until 1984 Pierre Plantard de St.-Clair was the Priory, now no one is sure who has filled the role. They control many things including the Illuminati. And is the castle maant to reprsent Rennes le Chateau. The Merovingian stronghold in the South of France?

The theory of causality is the older theory of science, the newer theory that comes with quantum mechanics is the theory of choice. That choice effects the results. Causality says that cause effects results. In quantum physics because choice effects results you can never resolve the problem completely, you always have uncertaintly. Books by Amit Goswami talk about the differences between causality and choice in a spirtual context. The architect says that Neo is the remainder of an equation just as you would have a remainder because of the uncertainty in Quantum Physics, so it seems that Neo represents choice, and the Merovingian Causality. Or at least he being a limiter of human freedom, would chose to believe in something limiting.

He doesnt chose to believe in causality.. but he's a computer program. However intellegent he may be, he is limited by causality, where as humans (atleast, that appears to be the case in this series) are not. Through out the series it seems that all the programs aside from the Oracle are incapable of grasping the idea of free choice.

While Neo is the champion of choice, the Merovingian is the champion of causality. While Neo is the savior of the Matrix, breaking people out with choice, the Merovingian tempts people with carnal desires. He is the anti-Christ, or Satan, or whatever you want to call him. In short, he is the Anti-Neo. Everything in the Matrix has a balance, the father, the mother, that sort of thing. Except for Smith, which is why he is so dangerous.

What does the "Dieu de putain" line mean? That has been driving me crazy.

Look, guys and girls, who cares? It's a movie so enjoy it! The Wachowski's just made it to be a cool movie, they tried to be deep and meaningful with it, and it works. That's it.

And btw, Ryutaro Murai, it says in the film that Smith is the opposite of Neo "The result of the equasion trying to balance itself out". And no, I didn't research into the film to find that one out :P

Its pretty clear that the movie draws heavily upon the conflict between the Catholic Church and the Secret Societies that have opposed them since the death of Christ - in particular the Priory of Scion. Consider the following:

Trinity is the term used to describe the father, son and holy ghost of Christian/Catholic faith - through her name, Trinity in the Matrix represents the fact that Christ is a god and a part of the holy trinity. She comes in conflict (in Matrix 2 and 3) with the Merovingian who's name is from the royal French bloodline that is supposedly directly descended from a mortal Christ. The centuries long conflict between the Priory of Scion (the proponents of mortal Christ) and the Catholic Church (proponents of Christ as deity) is distilled into these two characters.

Neo is clearly cast as Christ himself in this story. The fact he chooses to "join" with Trinity seems to indicate that the movie leans toward the Catholic view of things. Where the Merovingian is a "fake" - a program in the guise of a person using his powers and influence to live like a god, Neo is the opposite - a person in the guise of a program (while in the Matrix) who is later revealed to actually be a God (the Messiah).

By this logic, the Merovingian in the Matrix is a metaphor for the False Messiah of Catholic/Christian prophecy who will appear and try to usurp the kingdom of Christ for himself prior to the Second Coming. If the Merovingian were referred to by the name "Michael" anywhere in the movie, that would seal the deal as Michael is the supposed name the anti-christ will use.

The fact that humanities last city is named "Zion" lends credence to the idea that the filmakers were using the Matrix trilogy as a pro-Christian parable since Zion can alternatively mean, "Jerusalem", "the Church of God" or "Heaven".

Casting the Merovingian as the false Christ spoken of in both Catholic and Priory of Scion lore leaves the role of Lucifer open for Mr. Smith. There are any number of clear connections between Smith and the Devil - possession of others against their will being the most obvious.

I'd have to watch all the movies again to really look for less conspicuous evidence that the Matrix is a treatise directly designed to attack the Priory of Scion and their ideals in favor of supporting the Christian doctrine, but given the clear evidence above, its hard to discount the fact that a deliberate connection exists.

M - You mentioned the curches being in the shape of Virgo. Virgo has a great deal to do with it. The Knights Templar, Priory of Sion and the religious views they held all beleived strongly in the pagan idea of the Sacred Femenine. I think if you look there, you'll find your connection.

Accidentally, while cruising the web on the Da Vinci Code, I have landed here. Very interesting additions to the stories in stone, which we no longer throw up with a hundred years of gusto. I am not a Matrix afficianado. What is of interest is the current need to be real in the continuity. What stalls discovery is the inherent duality of "language", and therefore of all. Yes the playful human is aware however "language" does not allow expression of much more than contrast and comparison, action/reaction, how does one assert even small change in their reality if all is causality? Build a pyramid, build a stone cold dome, and when you have passed the mortal test, it will mark your time.

I know a bit of french, and knowing what I do know, a lot of the translated words seemed to just emphasize the action. It's like in dubbed Japanese movies when the character's mouth is speaking like 10 words and the voice over has like a 4 word sentence. You might even be able to take out the word filthy and it'd still give it's intended reply. Of course, my dad (who does speak french) says that a lot of the time, if you literally translated every word they say in french to english, some of the sentences would make no sense, and I have a feeling that that is why the translator web pages give a nonsensical reply, because it's just translating the words, not telling us what was meant by the words. In either case, I'm gonna leave now because everyone else here is talking about history, and here I am translating a french curse, and I feel a little dumb.

I believe, as in the Matrix trilogy-us in this so-called "real world", are involved in a war that has raged since the Crusades. There is in fact a crusade happening right now...in Iraq but with its seat of conflict...in of all places, Jerusalem. The Catholics operate on one side and the non-Cathlic free-masons another. Gold has ceased to be of any value...that is why Pres. Nixon smartly took the US off the gold standard in the early 70's. The currency in this global economy is petro-dollars, soon to be replaced with techno-dollars. Techno-dllars you say? What are they? Just ask Bill Gates!
