Honda protects me from stealing my own CD player

Last year, the wife and I bought a used 1999 Honda Civic EX. So far, it has been a very reliable car.

One feature on the car that I never understood or cared to understand was the "Anti-Theft" light located on the CD player that blinks every few seconds. The car does not have an alarm on it, so I thought it might have just been for show. Well, when the battery died on the car the other day, we found out exactly what it does.

After jump-starting the battery back to life, the car worked fine except for the CD player. Any time I'd try to turn it on, it would ask me for a code. I had no idea what it was talking about. After a few unsuccessful tries at guessing the code, I went to the manual.

It turns out that if the CD player loses power, the "Anti-theft" feature kicks in. Each car has its own individual code and can only be obtained by the dealer. Apparently, I was supposed to have received a card with the magic code on it. No such luck though.

I called the dealer. They looked up my info and said they do have the code, but they can't give it over the phone. "We can't verify that you are you."

I said, "But I am me. Ask me anything. Birthplace. My mom's maiden name. Whatever."

"Sorry, sir. This is for your own protection."

Well, after a physical appearance at the dealership, the CD player is once again operational and the code is tattooed on my left chest. Their security was definitely impressive. I just wish more companies who hold much more valuable information took the same measures.

Scott, if only I had known. There is a product you can buy for about $12 from your local parts store (ie NAPA, O'Reilly-if you have those) that's called a Memory Saver. It's powered by a 9V batt. that plugs into your cigarette lighter, so that when your battery is not functional or the wires are unhooked, it retains all the necessary information and saves you a buttload of time. As I said before, "If only I had known."

Oh, and the other reason you may have the "Anti-Theft" light that blinks and isn't actually functional as an alarm may be that your key has a certain code on it that sends a signal to the starter to where no one can hotwire you car. (Tip of the Day)

Good article, so much variety on your site! I love it.

I have the same thing on my stereo and don't have the code either after buying the car used. My car has the key thing mentioned in Justin's post too. My main key sends a signal that it is the correct key, but the spare doesn't have this code in it. SO, the spare will open the door but won't start the car! What good is that? haha. I can't lose my key I guess...

I AM going through the same thing , I had to jump start my car also and my cd player locked up. of course the dealer ship oh so easly "forgot" to give me the code. They dont consider that I have a busy life and I cant be running all the time to the dealership because their car wont work right. It seems they do these things on purpose somtimes just to get you back and charge you a service fee.

This same scenario happened to me in my car. I tried to pry it open with something at first, but then I figured i'd give a guess at the code. That didnt work too well and i didn't have the "code". So the next step was calling the dealership, which you forgot to mention, will only give me the code if i shell out 90 bucks. What is that? I am outraged with the Honda corporation and will never purchase another piece of crap from them ever again.

Like Kevin, they want to charge me $90. to get the info for locating the code, which is behind the radio. I am so upset with them, I sure it is the crummy dealership in Las Vegas, NV. They are getting so shoddy in there workmanship, each time I have had the tires rotated they need to have air replaced within a day or two, and watch out for their 30,000 mile check up, they don't check the battery or the wipers. I guess I will have to change to a Ford, or Chevy. very angry in Vegas

Well, our battery died on our 1998 Accord, the radio will not work. Of course, we do not have the code so the dash has to be dismantled to get the serial number. This is beyond bizarre to say the least. We have owned Hondas since 1984 and I am so angry I am seriously thinking this is the last one because this was not explained at purchase time and we bought it new. The dealer is of no help and Honda is worse.

William,

That is entirely unreasonable. I would have raised hell before they made me pay 85 bucks.

I have a question. I just bought a used 92 accord from a guy, and I had to buy a replacement radio for my car from a junk yard because the original one got stolen. It is the same kind of radio as the other one its just not the original one. I am also having a problem with the code. I have no idea about which dealership it came from and I seen that it said something about the code being on back of the radio itself. I was wondering if this was true before I went hacking away at my dash to get it out. I would really appreciate any helpful advice right about now.

I'm looking on eBay at radios to replace mine in my old '87 Civic si ... well, of course, many have the anti-theft feature, a few mention that they also happen to have the code. But while looking for an old radio (hopefully _without_ an anti-customer feature) I saw that someone was selling the code for your radio if you gave them the serial number for $10.

You'll have to search on ebay with a search text similar to:

(honda,acura) code

But of course, Caveat Emptor! (Buyer Beware!)

I'm just about to go to Honda Dealer to get the code from them. I have a 2000 accord and they are going to charge me $72.00 because they said that they weren't keeping codes back then in there computers. I don't know what else to do but to go to them, any suggestions would surely help...

I have a 2000 civic and i just put in a new battery. Then its telling me i need to put in my code? What the hell? I read some of the comments and you have to pay like almost $100 bucks, just for a damn code? What is going on here? We already own the car so why do we have to pay for a damn code? Anyone knows the code?

The code is different for each car. You'll need to contact your dealer.

I can't believe that people can find this site to complain about their Honda radios but can't find where to go to solve their problems. You need to take control and stop being the victim.
I just replaced the battery in my Accord and of course did not have the sacred code. So I went to http://hondaunlockcodes.homestead.com/
where they offer to sell the codes. This site also provides FREE detailed instructions with photographs on how to remove your Honda radio to get the serial number information. The process is very easy, takes about an hour and you only need a couple of screwdrivers. It also gives tips on how to do it so you don't damage your dashboard. Next I called my local Honda dealer and described my situation. I thought I might have to go to the dealership to get the code but they gave it to me over the phone for FREE. So after one hour of MY labor and a phone call I was back in business at NO COST TO ME.

I have a 99 Honda Accord 2dr EX model. I am frequently frustrated by the fact that the CD player is very "picky" about the CDs that it can play. It definitely can't play copied CDs, and a lot of store bought CDs often don't work, or at best, it takes forever to find the first track.

Does anybody have similiar experiences? What alternatives are there? Can Honda repair the thing? Are there good aftermarket solutions out there? Are later model Hondas any better. (I have a friend who has similar problems on their '99 also).

thanks!

I do not like this code. It is Saturday. I called the Honda dealer in Washington, DC, where i am, to get my code. Of course they are closed because it is past six o'clock. So I called the dealer where the car was purchased in Boulder, Colorado. They can not give me the code because their service dept. closes at 3. So I call Honda dealer in Hawaii. They say they can not give me code over the phone. I have to come in to dealership to get code. I say how can I come in to dealership, I am in Washington, DC. They say why you call Hawaii if you are in Washington, DC. I explain my situation. They say How do I know you didn't steal radio? I say I fax you my registration and liscense. They say no, computer service division in Calfornia is already closed for the day. I say why not you tell me this when I first call? They say why you not go in to Honda dealership in Washington DC on Monday? I say I work 9-5 to to afford my Honda. They say sorry, and goodbye. So I guess I will be waiting another week before I can listen to radio again.

i havent had any problems with my code. i had a 94 accord ex and now have a 95. (i just happen to like the body style of those years and they are very reliable.) anyway, i took the radio from the 94 and put into the 95 because it had the cd, cassette and radio all in one. when i lost my code, i went to the honda dealership in Fairfax, VA on Rt 50 - i think it is Fairfax Honda. even though i did not buy my honda there and i had bought the stereo off of ebay, the guys in service were very nice and gave me the code for FREE once i had showed them my license, reg and proof of ebay purchase for the cd. i lost the code for the orignal stereo out of the 95 and went back again to them for that code and they gave it to me again for FREE. they are very nice.

Thanks Brandon for sending me down the right path. Took the code from the inside of the glovebox and called my local dealer. Although I bought the car from a private party, the service manager was helpful, and by giving him those combination of numbers and letters over the phone he was able to look up the activation code for the CD/radio in my car (1999 Civic). I know that the car was not sold new out of that dealership so he must be accessing info that any other Honda dealer can aquire (it took him 60 secs.). Some are more obliging then others I guess. Hope this can be of help to somebody.

Another place to try is the fuse boxe(s). I found my code under the lid of the fusebox under the hood. Like Brandon said the most common place is on the left in the glovebox. Another place is the underside of the change holder.

I am having a similiar problem. I own a Honda Accord 1997. When I bought the car 2 1/2 yrs ago it wasn't from a honda dealership. They did give me the code but I lost it. I put it in my glove compartment and haven't seen it since. I work at Domino's Pizza as a delivery girl and it is complete and utter torture to ride around all day listening to the noises of your car. I miss my stereo so much. I called the dealership today after reading this forum and I have to call back on Monday. If they try and charge me I will just buy a new cd player. I have been wanting a new one anyway. My 6-disc changer is so stubborn. It sometimes wouldn't play if it was hot outside. It won't play alot of burnt cd's either. I'm probably better off with a new one I guess but in the mean time I would like to be able to at least listen to music while I drive.

I have a 2003 Civic. The battery went dead and the CD player will not operate. I have entered the security code and it will not accept it. I checked at the dealer and it is the correct code. I was told at the Honda dealer to disconnect the battery, cross the battery cables and this would reset the system. I would be able to enter the security code. I did this and the CD will still not accept the code. The dealer tells me they do not known why. Any suggestions ???

Well this is sort of an update from my last message! The day before I was suppose to call my dealership about the code. My BF found it at his house. YAY!! Anyway so I now have my music back and it is so much nicer. But would u believe the day I got it back I got a ticket for a dead inspection! It was only dead because I had an exhaust leak and no money to fix it. My father loaned me the money so I got it fixed. I also got it inspected too. The day I got it inspected a strange squeking sound arrived. Just my LUCK! So it's going in the shop AGAIN tomorrow morning. It is the most annoying squeek I have ever heard. I do not think its my brakes. It does it when I turn, gas and brake. It worse when I reverse! It sounds somewhere between a baby crying and a cow mooing! I'll let u know the problem in case any one else has this problem. Oh by the way I was wondering if there was some sort of pattern on the codes to our stereo's so I am going to post my code and would like for other people to please! it's 25412 only 4 numbers are used. it forms a circle and the begining numbers is the ending number! That's the only things I have found that are sort of a coincidence! Thanks!

March 17, 2004 4:56 PM

Interesting, Ninny.

Now all we need is someone else that has a '97 Honda Accord, who hasn't misplaced their code, to post their numbers.

But, then again, why would they even have sought out this thread?

I have a '97 Honda Accord but, sadly, didn't receive one when I bought it used.

Never truly worried about it until the "check engine" light came on yesterday ! Seems as if I would try to defeat one problem ... I'd wind up with another !

Cheers,

Terry

UPDATE:
Well the problem with the squeking was just my brakes. It's fixed now so everything's ok. I probably won't be delivery pizza's for much longer anyway so the car problems should subside. I am moving to another state. It's about and hour and a half from where I live now and have lived all my life. So far I am very pleased with my Honda. I have yet to have a serious problem not due to wear and tear or myself.

I am going on long drive in a few hours. I hope the inside of the glove box or whatever works.

There was a white sticker with a 9 digit (with one letter F) code in glove box.
Called and got the code right from the service guy.
Service guy (Curry Honda, Yorktown, NY) said that it was 1 in 99 chance that it could be in the glove box. Well I just happened to be lucky .... today .... FINALLY.
No charge and I should be set to go.
AND ...... the radio and CD work.

I have a 1998 Prelude, I unplugged the fuse to my radio. When I put the fuse back, I needed the radio code to enable the radio. I call Honda got the code but the radio would not accept it. I rechecked with Honda to make sure the code was correct.

My local dealer told me to disconnect the battery terminals and touch them together for 10 to 30 seconds, that did not work. Now they tell me the the radio must be bad and I need to replace it. I do not believe them.

Can you help me?

I have just had keyless entry put on my recently purchased pre-owned CR-V, I have run into the security code thing...that was not explained to me by the installer or by my car salesman. I have made an appointment with the honda dealership but it is much to my disbelief that it is going to cost me as much as $100 to crack the code! I am glad I consulted this website...Ill try the http://hondaunlockcodes.homestead.com and see if I can get by the cheaper way!

I just bought an old '94 Del Sol today. Decided to spend the afternoon doing maintenace work. One thing I did was replace the battery. Bad idea...the dreaded code! I must say thank you to everyone that has posted a comment in this forum. I managed to find the code written on a piece of scotch tape stuck inside the glove compartment. Only problem is, it's obviously been there 10 years and is all faded. Managed to make out 3 of the five numbers. With only 6 buttons to push, I figure that leaves a total of 36 combinations to try. My question is, what is the correct way to enter the code? Is there a clear button or something that needs to be pushed in between guesses? I'm so close yet so far!

Thanks to everyone for sharing their frustrations on this page. The advice on looking in your glove compartment is very helpful. I was able to find a sticker with the serial number in there. After reading that someone was able to find their code, I decided to go back and look a little harder. Interestingly enough, I actually found the coveted anti theft ID card with the code on it. I was starting to preemptively get angry and was thinking about how I would start yelling at the dealership and cause a scene when they suggest that I pay $100 for the code that I thought was never given to me. I'm glad to have saved myself the embarrassment.

By the way, I would give up my code, but it's not going help anyone. I think each system has its own unique code independent of what kind of car you have. It's 21122 just in case, but I don't think it will help

I didn't have the code or anything. Then the other day, i found the card, with the code on it in my glove box, stupid me! But when i put the code in, it still does not work! Is there more to this that i am supposed to be doing?! I was reading some other website, and it said i should disconnect the negative part of my battery and reconnect it, then try it again within 10 seconds of the car being on, but i'm not so sure if this will work. The location for my daughter's 1996 Accord EX stereo reset code is on a sticker located on the backside of the ashtray. Just pulled it all the way out and there it was. Email me and let me know if this helped anyone out. If for some reason your stereo does not except the code on the 1st try, simply disconnect the negative cable from the battery and touch it against the positive side for a ten second period, reconnect and reinter your code.

I have a 92 Honda Accord with a previously dead battery and of course no code. I found my serial # on the bottom of the radio and called the dealership where the car was purchased. I was super nice to the guy in the parts department and it paid off! He researched the car, called the warranty department and called me back with the code. I am very thankful and will make sure I write it down in multiple places so I don't have to go through this again.

Purchased used 1997 Honda Accord. Radio wouldn't work because the used car dealer disconnected the battery to install a new coil pior to giving me the car. Read car manual about radio. Disconnected ground from battery for a few seconds and reconnected. Security code was found imprinted inside of glove box along with some other numbers below it that weren't needed. After disconnecting the ground to the battery the radio went back to program mode when turned on. Simply entered code found in glove box and radio worked. Glad I didn't have to remove the radio to find the serial number. I couldn't believe how easy it was. Unfortunately the dealer I purhased the car from wasn't a Honda dealer and didn't know where to look for the code.

As are the rest of you Im completly PISSED OFF!Why have the anti theft feature anyway?I have never once heard of anyone stealing a factory deck out of any car.And its almost impossible to remove the sterio yourself.Another excuse of a foreign car company to have you shell out 75$ just so you can listen to your own radio.Bull Shit!

I have a 2003 Honda Civic. I've been having problems with the factory cd player. Some cds have gotten stuck and the display shows ERROR. It doesn't happen all the time, just randomly. Anyone else experienced this? Any advice?

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

I had my battery changed this morning on my 97 Accord. Just found out about the code for the anti theft radio that I was never given. Dealer no help, found this sight and I appreciate the shared info. I was able to find code and serial number on bottom of ash try. Because I was trying to get the radio to work right after the battery change I now have an error 3 but hope to disconnect and try re-entering code. Appreciate the shared info/ideas!

I made my initial post on this forum on March 17th.

At that time, I knew there would be a potential code problem.

Well, last Friday, my wife got into the car to go to work and it wouldn't start. It was the original battery in her '97 Honda Accord.

There was never any indication, whatsoever, that it was getting weak. I put a charger on it and within 30 minutes it appeared to be charged. It then started right up !

But, even though I put the charger back on it for another 6 hours .... and it still started ..... 4 hours later it wouldn't.

The next day I started phoning around for a battery and a vendor who also had the capability to preserve my precious radio from giving the dreaded " C O d e " message.

I live in Harford County, Maryland.

Well, the place I normally go is to "Battery Warehouse" ... but their "Memory Saver" device was "out of commission". However, they wanted $50 for the standard "factory spec'd" battery ... $60 for a heavy-duty.

Phoned "Western Auto" .. who sold the $12 memory device but didn't have one for use in their shop ! Screw that !

Oh, What the Hell ... It's just a battery ... Might as well just go to my local Honda Dealership .....

Called them. Good Gosh ! They wanted the "Family Tree" of our car ( including VIN# ! ) before they could quote me a price. $123 after all was said and done (including tax) ! AND .. they weren't going to help me with the code. No, they were going to keep the motor running while they changed the battery ! Over $90 more, if I wanted the stupid code number.

Called back "Battery Warehouse" and they said they'd be willing to change the battery while the engine was running.

Put the charger on the battery for about 30 minutes again ... and ... IT STARTED !!!!

I guess I hadn't focused on the radio the previous day.

I looked down at it and, sure enough, ..... " C O d e " was displayed and, other than that, it was asleep !

Oh well, the battery gave us it's best and, when my time comes to depart this earth, I hope I go the same way.

So, I get to the "Battery Warehouse" and the guy tells me about a shop about 100 feet away that can get the code. Problem was that they were only open Mon - Fri .... 10 - 4. Pretty good hours, huh ? Wish I could have run my business that way !

This past Monday, I go over there. They quoted $30 - $45 and I made an appointment for today, Thursday, at 11am. They said it would take 30 to 45 minutes to complete the job.

Today, I got there more like 11:15am. ( OK, so give me some grief .. I'll probably be late for my funeral as well ) But, I was out of there by 11:45am with my radio working ! Cost me $30 and I now have the code # for my radio !

I know it took him less than 5 minutes to get the radio out ( I hadn't even finished reading the front section on the Baltimore Sun yet ), make a phone call, and get the code. It took twice as long to get the damn thing reinstalled back together again !

It just seems so damn rare, these days, that you have a truly "good" experience. I had one earlier today, that's about all I can say. I'm happy, happy, happy.

I told the guy about this forum and said I have no idea how many folks from Maryland have or will ever trip upon this site ... but damn it ... If you live in Maryland, near Catonsville, Owings Mills or Bel Air .........

Call "Sound Solutions". Their Bel Air phone number is 410-877-7230.

OK ... now I did what I said I would do .........

BUT, let's think about this. It took him 3 or 4 minutes in daylight to get the damn radio out. I was fascinated watching him do it. Never could have figured out how ( much like the disassembly of my Sears Kenmore washing machine last month ) How much less time would a thief take ? And, really, who the Hell really would want to steal the damn thing in the first place?

I query whether this "Security" aspect of our Honda was for the "security" of our physical asset ( the radio ) or for the "security" of Honda and/or Honda affiliate's financial future cash flow ?

I have a '98 Corvette that we rarely take out of the garage. It has a "security" system as well. In fact, it must draw a bit more power than the Honda to keep it going. Time goes by ( too quickly it seems ) and I've forgotten to go out and start it up ( it IS our fair weather car, you should know ! ... Wouldn't want rain to fall upon it unless unavoidable .. with 14K miles ) and the battery has gone dead twice on me. So, I've put in two new batteries. Did I have a problem with some silly radio code to make it work again ? NO !!!! There is no such "code" ! The "security" system is for if someone tries to break into the damn car and steal the freek'in automobile ... not the radio ! And, if anyone thinks that the gosh darn Honda factory installed radio is better than our radio in the Corvette ... You must be smoke'in crack !

Sometimes, I am caused to ponder ... "Who really won WW-II" ?

That's my story ... and I'm "stick'in to it" !

I had my aftermarket JVC MP3/CD stereo deck stolen out of my car and decided to put the factory stock stereo back in and got the code error. So I punched in what I thought would be the code a few times but of course I was wrong each time. The stereo locked up so I did some digging on the Internet.

I ended up calling the local dealership. They asked me to drive in with my license, proof of vehicle ownership and the radio. They punched the reference # and the serial # into a computer and it looked up the code; took about 5 minutes. No charge for anything (probably because the radio was already out and they didn't have to do any real work).

Some posts suggested disconnecting the battery and then crossing the leads to do some kind of reset. Instead of messing with the battery leads I just pulled the fuse for the radio for a few seconds and then put it back in and didn't have to wait to punch in new codes (or it could have been that I disconnected the entire radio again).

I didn't find any code posted anywhere within my vehicle either (VIN last 5 digits, under fuse box or glove compartment); Honda Accord EX-R.

Hope this helps someone...

i have a 99 honda crv and it doesnt have the cd player only tape deck. my battery went dead a few times and when i jumped the car it never asked me for a code. does this mean that the tape deck doesnt have the anti theft code feature? and i have read many complaints and replies and it seems as though the dealer will anly charge you to take the radio out just to get the radio serial number. i suggest that you take it out yourself save lots of money and go to the dealer. now i know about this feature/problem if my radio ever does fuck up i will know what to do thanks.

I bought a used '99 Accord from a non-Honda dealership back in August. After requesting the "code", the service manager said "Go up the street to the Honda dealership, they'll give it to you.", At which I should have just walked out of that dealership, but I really liked the car,and it had low miles. Anyhow, I never thought I'd need the code, until my alternator went out on me. Sure enough, no code, no luck. Called the original dealer that sold the car, about 350 miles away, and was told they didn't still have the info. in their computers, but they we're very helpful. Looked in the 2 places he told me too, the glove box and the under hood fuse box, no dice. I guess this is just a good excuse for me to throw my ond Sony in, it sounds 10x better anyways, and WILL play burnt c.d.'s. I'll probably find the code after pulling out the stereo, and on eBay the stereo will go. Thanks for all the help with the postings, got alot of great info.

i been doing some thinking about this code thing and honda charging you like 100 dollars to get it.

1)honda doesnt need to take the radio out to see of the radio is stolen.

2)if you prove to honda that you are who you say that you are they can look in your records and give you the code that origonally came with the car you bought and there is no need to see if the radio was stolen you cant steal from yourself. if they would just give you the code that is in your records and if it works then great if not then it may not be the radio that came with the car by which case you wouldnt be going into honda in the first place.

3)i think that honda looks in your records for the code puts it in the radio and makes the radio work again then charges you for work they didnt even do. if the code works in that radio then it is the radio that came with that car, and if it doesnt work then the radio may be stolen. so my guess is that they check the code first and 9 times out of ten it works which means that the radio cant be stolen from the car it was origionally installed in.

4)if someone brings in a ford with a honda radio then common sense means that the radio is either stolen or sold.

if i bring my car into honda and they want to know if the radio is stolen i would say bullshit just give me the code that came with the car and not the radio.

if honda uses the same code for every radio of the same model then the theft thing is useless cause anyone can get the code of a radio that isnt stolen and use it in one that is stolen.

does this makes any sense to you.

haha i was reading for about 2 hours, i did everything i could think of honda, wanted to charge me 75$ to tell, sound solutions was 30$, i said fuck it, ill get it out of honda one way or another. so i happen to stumble across the original owner of my cars name and where he bought it from, so i call them, give them his name only and i bought it there a 4 years ago. boom code inc, took me a total of 45 seconds on the phone. no charge. and i agree honda doesnt need to take out the radio, give me the code for the car, not the radio. so anyway ill still proably get a new radio, but still i thought of a truimphant in my favor! and btw no sticker was anywhere in my car with this code in it, ill do some # aliasing later and post if i find anything

Stereo Code:
I bought a used 2000 Honda CRV and the guy told me the sticker inside the glove box was the code "just in case." My battery died thus needing the secret code. Well, the code in the glove box wasn't the code for the stereo but it was the serial number and I called the Honda dealer near me in VA and they wanted $90 since I didn't buy the car there and said it would take a couple hours since I had to bring it in so they could put it on some machine. Buncha bull.
After looking at this forum I contacted the service department of Open Road Honda in NJ and gave them the serial number and I got a code in a few minutes. Problem solved.

After changing the battery in our 2000 honda civic we ran into the same problem! My wife tried entering random codes into the stereo, after 9 times the digital display said "error" After reading the owners manual she discovered that the car and stereo now have to be on for 1 hour before we can attempt to enter the correct code. After 1 hour the display should reset to where the digital display will ask for the code again. Hope this helps everyone!

Thanks to Tim's response to Brandon, I looked in my glove box and there was a sticker with the radio serial number. I called the dealer I use for maintenance and was given the code right away. I was getting ready to pull the dash and take out the stereo. Thanks to the posting by TIm I avoided any work! My dealership also said if you try the code and it doesn't work, to disconnect the battery for about 10 minutes, reconnect and try again. I guess this resets the radio to accept the code. Good luck all!!!

I happend to read this article before i purchased a 2004 honda civic(with the anti-theft feature) and asked them for the code before i left the lot, they at first acted as if my car didnt have a antitheft code and when i said that i used to own one and i need a code or ill have to go thru the crap you fellas went thru, he told me that the "new" models codes work different and that they only need a code when the dash is open, which would void the warranty so i better not do that, and that they cant obtain the code till the first 3 payments are made. after i made the required payments i called up having a similar situation as the first poster here had, he said that if i come down and verify that i am myself he will gladly give me the code, for 95$!!!!!!! i told him i asked the dealer before for the code and he couldnt give it to me for the nunber of reasons i mentioned above, and that i WILL NOT pay 100 for a reason that the dealer told me WOULD NOT set it off, "because this years model is different" BS! i told them that i know of many lawyers that would be glad to take this case, of lying to a customer holding back codes that i OWN, he gave m,e the code for free and gave me a years worth of oil changes free. EVERY 1K miles here i come!

I happened to change the battery and got to the same issue that you guys are discussing here: CD-CODE. I called my honda dealer where i bought my car. He just asked me the last 8 digit of VIN and immly he gave the code. Now, CD is unlocked. It was just few sec :-). I guess, it all depends of the dealer.
Moreover, the CD was in state "Err4". Still the code was accepted.
Good luck.

I have a 2003 Odyssey and had the same problems described above. My wife kept every scrap of paper they gave us none of which had any serial numbers or unlock codes on them.
The dealer wanted $86.00 to "remove the stereo and take it apart to get its serial number". Hogwash. The 5-digit code was right on the left outside panel of the glovebox and it worked like a charm. I'm sure the dealer is well aware of this but has no problem scamming $86 everytime they can.

hey Andrew if i were you i would have told the dealer that i will take my business to another dealer. i dont know about where you are from but here in san diego we have like 10 of each kind of dealers where i can buy my car all within near driving distance. if a dealer gives me a problem then i will just walk out and go somewhere else. most of the dealers here get their cars from the same inventory lot.

I had the same problem with the code. I took the unit out myself and got the serial number, called the dealer and they gave me the code over the phone. Unfortunately, now when I plug the unit back in, the anti-theft light starts blinking but when I turn the unit on, nothing happens. No message to enter the code, nothing. Is there some magical combination of things I need to do to get the power to at least come on? I was very careful when taking the unit out and reinstalling.

They didn't ask for my name etc... I was surprised how simple the code number was. Here is the number - 210-680-3371. The Dealer is called Gunn Honda. They're based in Texas.

Thanks for the info ( I read ALL the postings). I called the dealership first before finding this page and they gave me the run around ( and didnt know what "code" i needed). I then looked thru all my receipts / manual /etc....and found nothing. LUCKILY, I found this website and started looking in glove box / fuse panel / coin tray / engine fuse box..and finally found my 5 digit code !! THANK YOU !

on the newer hondas (mid 90's to 2004) it seems to be placed somewhere on the car ( see above locations).

i WOULD suggest that if you cant find the code....and have to spend over a 100 dollars....DONT. JUST TAKE THE CRAPPY RADIO OUT AND GO DOWN TO BEST BUY / CIRCUIT CITY AND BUY A CD / RADIO FOR 100 BUCKS AND HAVE THEM INSTALL IT FOR FREE ....( WITH THE CAR RADIO KIT they will have to use to put in .....it should cost around $130.00 and you will never have to deal with the CODE THING again !!

I was about to do that ...but looked around my car first for the code..and found it.

I was VERY close to having my car radio replaced with a new cd / radio!

its about the same damn price for a new radio as going to the dealer to get "code" for about 100 bucks !!

Honda is full of CRAP !! luckily their cars run forever.....and that is their only saving grace.

A quick little story for you guy. I Wanted a CD player in the car. A Honda ISA3 stereo was fitted which had radio and tape only. Went to buy a stereo with MP3 CD capabilities from Halford currently with free fitting. Asked how long to fit a stereo to my car and was told about 20 minutes, thought that was great so I checked out the stereos. Picked one out and saw the man again, he said lets look at your car. After looking he said I'll have to leave it with them for the full day as he'll have to strip the full dash board out. I at this point I declined as I didn't have a full day to be without a car.
I have changed my mind since looking on the internet and decided to add a MP3 CD multidisc (Alpine CHA-S634)to the Honda ISA3 stereo and will attempt to fit it my self. I'm so sure it will not take me a full day however the dash needs to come appart which I have not instuction on and I expect this will be the worst part. The wiring is solder free and wire cutting free just plugs which convert to the miltidisc. I'll keep you posted on how well it goes.

Kind Regards
Keveroo

Hey suds and everyone else with the same problem I had:

I futzed around trying to guess the code, then found it written down in my manual (from when I had this problem two years ago.)

But then the damn thing wouldn't accept the code, probably because I had made too many false tries.

I had my local garage guy disconnect the black terminal on the battery for a half a minute, then reconnected it. The stereo accepted the code on the first try! (I think you have to punch in the (in my case) four digit code and then push the fifth button. The radio came on immediately.

Thank you all for the help and venting! It was nice to know I wasn't the only one in a mess.

I had to replace my battery on 99 Accord (v6). I had the radio code, but my kids pushed buttons before I could enter the code. Didn't want to disconnect the battery again, so I called the local Honda dealer. You can reset the radio without disconnecting the battery. In the main fuse box under the hood (against firewall on passenger side), just remove the 40 amp "Backup/Acc" fuse for about thirty seconds, reinstall, turn key to on, turn on radio, enter code.
For those people who don't know your code, you can get three attempts before needing to pull the fuse again...Not too bad if you have some time on your hands...

No charge for code (32253). I came across the infamous stereo code scenario with my 2000 honda accord. after reading many of these postings I thought I would also have to pay 60 to 100 dollars to remove the stereo but that is far from true. After calling American Honda in Denver,CO I was told that the serial # needed to obtain the code was located in one of many places all over the car.
All codes will be located on a white sticker with 10 digits/letters.
1.inside glove box 2.on drivers door 3. under coin tray 4.under lid of center console 5.on trunk hinges 6.near rear speakers in trunk. (mine was in glove box)
After calling my local honda dealer with the serial # they gave me the code over the phone 32253.

I bought my 1996 used 2.5 yrs ago, the code is on a little sticker in the manual. You put it on a card and keep it in your wallet. I remember mine by heart now though. I think if you raised enough hell, you might not have to pay it. Good luck to all.

i guess another way is to get your oil changed at the honda dealer and and mention as a matter of fact that you need the code; of course some smart 'service advisor' will tell you that it takes one hour and dismantling the radio to get the serial number- then bam; give those slinky bas%$#^@ the number. watch their grins go off, while the get that code. these guys can get it in 2 minutes.

98 Honda CRV Stereo Code......Found under the Fuse Box Cover-Under your Hood. Remove Fuse Box Cover, which is just one clip, and you will find 2 plain white stickers with #s on them. Of course you will only need the one with the 5 digits.
If you have already attempted to inpute code #s, you will need to disconnect the neg. battery cable. You can place it back on within 5 seconds. ENJOY YOUR MUSIC AGAGIN! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

I have a 1992 Honda Accord EX four door that was recently broken into. I block I live on has cameras so the whole thing was caught on tape. The thief got in from the passenger side by jarring the lock. He was only in the car for a matter of seconds and all he did was pop the trunk and take a couple of items. However, I can't start my car at all. The battery is working but the engine won't turn over. I was wondering if anyone knew if Honda has some sort of security feature that would prevent the car from starting once broken into. I don't have any alarm systems installed.
Thanks.

Well I have finally come to terms with the "Code Problem". I had electrical work done on my 95 Honda Accord and they disconnected my battery and the radio says "Code". Huh? Code? I had never heard of this before. So I called my local Honda dealer here in College Park, Maryland. Well they want to charge me $69 bucks to pull the deck out and get the serial number. I said hell no. So I tracked down the original dealer which is in Charlotte, NC and the service guy asked for the last 6 digits of my VIN. He punches it in his computer and tells me that he doesn't have any record of the code or the car ever being purchased from them. I said excuse me, your dealer's sticker is on my car and the manual has your dealership listed on it. I bought the car from the original owner. He said he couldn't help me.

Well after reading the above postings I'm going to give it a try and look in my glovebox, ashtray, etc. I will let you know if I have any luck. Good luck to anyone with this problem. I will make sure I warn all my friends who own Honda's and Acura's to beware.

Honda-Civic-EX-1999 Same code problem.

My dealer sucks. He is not willing to get me the code using the VIN. Probably has the greed of making 100 bucks out of me. I might have to get him the serial number.

I tried a lot of different places but couldn't locate the code. Also tried removing the deck but invain. There are a couple of cables behind the panel that I'm unable to remove especially the one that connectd the emergency light button. And could only get the *Model Number* (number format is #####-A##-A##). Is this the serial number by any chance? I guess I'll have to spend more time removing my CD player.

By any chance, what is the format of this serial number? How long is it?

Thank you all for your invaluable insights and experiences.

1998 Accord EX V6. I replaced the battery three years ago, no problem with the "code" error then. However, I did run into this issue this past Friday. I was ready to call the dealer tomorrow (Monday) to get this fixed until I ran into this site. Thanks to everyone who has mentioned looking for the white sticker! I found mine on the underside of my trunk lid. The sticker had two sets of numbers, one five digit set on top (the radio code) and another set below. I entered in the five digits and the radio came on. Once again, thanks for the information.

okay, I found my card and actually my 2002 Honda Accord came with a "Anti-Theft Radio Identification Card" with my code number.

Now my CD player reads: ErrE

I put the code in and nothing happens. My battery did not nor did I have any work done on it. It just stopped working for some reason. I have been trying to figure out how to fix it. Any help?

I had the same problem with my radio. I bought my 1999 Honda CRV, EX used and the radio had a code error. I could not find the code in the owner's manual. I thought perhaps the previous wrote the code there somewhere. I called my local dealer who infomred me that I would have to remove the radio and get the serial number and then go down there and they would provide the code to me. He suggested that Honda also puts the code under the fuse box that is located under the hood or in the luggage compartment. I found the code in the luggage compartment. I had to leave the system on for about a hour so that the radio reseted itself. I then entered the code and the darn thing worked.

I had the same problem everyone else did with the radio code after I replaced my battery. I found the serial # sticker on the door of the glove compartment, so I didn't need to pull the radio out. But I didn't want to shell out cash for the code. Fortunately, as I was digging through the glove compartment, I found a plastic card called "Anti-Theft Radio Identification Card". On the card was a single sticker with two lines. The top line had the five digit code, the bottom had the serial number. The code worked when I punched it in, even though I was on "Err 8".

Called the 800 number that was given on this site. Told me that I would have to go to the dealship for assistance. Told him that they wanted to charge me. Told him Honda should pay for it, since this problem was anti customer. He said Honda's reply would be that someone had to misplace the number since they know that they put it in the glovebox or manual. Told him we had searched the car and the manual over and no code to be found. Told him about the numerous complaints on the website and that was were I got the number to call. So everyone, give them a call. They have caused us a big headache, lets give them one too! 1 800 999-1009 use option 5 (questions you may have about your honda)!

I checked the glove box and the fuse panels. Nothing. Finally I looked on the doorjam and there was a random white sticker with 5 digits. I tried it and it worked. This is great and it didn't cost me anything.

Hi,
Look through all your owner's papers. I found my unlock code on my owner's delivery checklist, no label attached to it, just the number. I tried the number just for the heck of it, and it worked. I would never have guessed it. So look for a number with digits 1-6 only. WHen you get it, write it in your owner's manual. As an aside, no more Honda's for me either. I love the Odyssey, but can't stand the idiot maintenance light. My Toyota doesn't have one, and it is just as good a car.

My wife recently had her battery replaced. After losing use of her stereo and attempting to guess at a code three times, she told me about the problem. Google led me to this site, which was a real blessing. The collective knowledge on this page covers possibly every solution to the lost code problem. After much reading, I located the code on the vehicle (near the trunk hinge) and successfully entered it into the stereo.

Thank you for having maintaining this site. To save time and spare frustration for future Honda-owners who visit, I have a few suggestions for how information may be organized.

Right up front, list the places in the vehicle (and in vehicle documentation) one should look for his or her code. Keep this panel fixed at the top of the page. At the bottom of the location list, have links to how to obtain the code from a dealer and how to get third-party service for this problem. Under the location list panel, the bottom of the page could continue as a scrollable bulletin board for posts relevant to this solution.

The "get a code from a dealer" page could be organized similarly, with a fixed panel listing recommendations at the top of the page, a link to third-party service options following, and a scrollable bulletin board for relevant posts at the bottom of the page. A prevention link would be a great place to collect the information such as the "Memory Saver" solution.

Thanks again for maintaining this site.

LISTEN..

Most Honda dealerships are fed up with this problem..

If you take out the deck yourself and get the serial # off of the unit, all you have to do is make a trip down with registration in hand and they will give you the code on the spot for free..

If one doesn't won't do it, call around until you find one that will.. that simple.

best way to get the deck out?

http://hondaunlockcodes.homestead.com

Follow the free step by step instructions..

Will cost you a trip down but hopefull you will only have to do this once as afterwords you should be smart enough to not lose it again!

Summary of Honda's Radio Code:

If the radio is stolen, you need a code to use it. The code is only viewable upon removal of the sterio, and is writen on the actual part they steal.

Why this was done:

To get you to buy another overpriced Honda battery from your Honda dealership.

Here is what you need to do.

1. Get the serial number from the stereo. Its either a sticker on the inside / outside glove box left side or on inside panel engine fuse box or ash tray. It starts with an MXXXXXXX. If you can't find the serial number for stereo, you have to remove the unit and it should be on the bottom of the unit. I have a plastic space underneath my radio so I just popped it out and read the serial without removine.

2. Call dealership and give serial, takes 30 seconds, they give you the code. If they tell you to come in just hang up on them, call another dealership until they give it to you over the phone. Thanks for the great security Honda! 100% frustration, 0% secure.

129) Posted by: Brad
October 16, 2004 6:49 PM

Last thing I forgot.
3. Write the code in the back page of your owners manual (where you should have written the phone number for your local dealership). The next owner will appreciate this.

Same thing happened to me on my 2002 RSX... But, I discovered a little tip on how to get your serial number without pulling the radio!

1. Turn the key to the on position
2. Turn radio on, so that the word "code" appears
3. Turn the radio off
4. Press and hold the #1 and #6 preset buttons for 3 seconds
5. Release buttons, and turn on radio
6. Your serial number will appear! It will be in the form U:#### and then L####... Your serial number is the 4 digits after the U and the four digits after the L
7. Call Acura/Honda dealer and have them look up your radio code.

Please note that this worked for my 02 RSX, but may not work for all Honda/Acura vehicles... Hope this helps!!!!

I have tried all sides of the glove compartment, the trunk, sides of the doors, change compartment, hinges... no white stickers besides the vin #. and it's not hte last 5 digits of my vin# because it has 9s.. which i wouldn't be able to put in. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Other specific locations that it might be for that model?
Free detailed instructions on removing the radio for this model?
Other resolutions?

I changed the battery on my honda 2000 CRV, afterwards the radio wouldn't work. Took it back to the original dealer, Crystal Lake Honda, they looked up my record & said "you don't bring your Honda here for service...will have to pull the radio and get the serial number, the charge will be $90. WHAT A RIP OFF..I called Honda and told them this is the last Honda I buy. The dealer never gave me the serial number or the code, why should he since he's sure I will eventually have to change the battery. I went to a local repair shop. Sharp Auto in Island Lake, IL, they charged me $45,pulled the radio, called honda got the code and reset my radio. More people need to contact Honda, this should be illegal...

I have an 01 civic ex and my battery went dead too and they also wanted about 100 bucks to fix it for me. I called a different honda store in my area and the guy was really cool. This is what he told me to do and it worked. Disconnect your negative cable for about 30 seconds then reconnect it. Turn your car to on (but don't turn it on) and make sure your radio is powered off. Hold down the 1 and the 6 on your stereo, then turn the stereo power on. You should see 2 sets of one letter and four numbers flash on the display. The first five will flash, then the second five. Write them down, call your service dept. and they should give you the code over the phone. No pulling out the stereo or anything. Hope it helps.

Hey,

I have read almost every entry on this page because I had the same issue as everyone who disconnected their battery. I called a Honda dealership in Dallas and gave them the code that was on the white sticker in my glove compartment. He gave me the five digit code over the phone.

I did have to call two other dealerships prior to the third but they gave me the code over the phone without charging me anything. I wrote the code and will never forget it again.

Later,

J

If a dealer wants to charge you, hang up and call another one. I called David McDavid Honda, 972-790-6100, and spoke to the service department.

Using the advice on this page, I pulled the radio fuse under the hood, put it back, then tried the code again and it worked. Evidently, the mechanic tried several random codes before I got the car back and this is what prevented me from getting the radio to work in the first place.

Can anyone help me, please - I have a 1996 Honda CRV and the ABS warning light on the dash has been on for about a week. I took it to the local dealers a few days ago and after diagnostic computer tests plus other tests, he tells me that they will need to go through all the wires to isolate the correct wiring for the ABS fault- this test took 4 hours and cost me $45. They think the wiring is either broken somewhere or dislodged, and that I would need to bring it back coz its going to take a whole day to check this out. Has anyone had a similar problem? or can anyone tell me how I can identify the ABS light wiring>

Thanks so much,

Martha
